Though there is mystery in the story, there is no rush to solve it, and events unravel at a slow pace until the last few chapters. Sujata Massey's narrative is very detailed and atmospheric. ![]() Her investigations take Perveen to the Satapur Palace located in the midst of dense forest, which has an atmosphere of mystery surrounding it. There is dispute between the Maharaja's mother and grandmother regarding his schooling process, and being in purdah, they would speak only to a woman solicitor, so Perveen is given an assignment by the British Government to do the discussions on their behalf. The Maharaja and his eldest son had died within a short span of two years, and the younger son, who is the current Maharaja, is just 10 years old. Set in 1922, the story revolves around a fictitious princely state called Satapur near Khandala.
